The recent drama around Arsenal trying to get their players to take a pay cut has revealed that things aren’t as peaceful underneath at the Emirates as we thought they are.
I have been one of those hailing Mikel Arteta for bringing unity and togetherness to the Arsenal dressing room
This is to take nothing away from the Spaniard, but I now see that his job is even harder than we thought initially.
As I write this, I am wondering what the mood would be like when the players return to training having had different choices about taking a pay cut.
I suspect that cliques could be formed again, especially if the players know the teammate that leaked the Ozil story.
Mikel Arteta can make his players play together, but he cannot stop them from choosing who they form cliques with inside or outside the dressing room.
I would expect him to use his man-management skills to bring back some harmony among his players, however, the Spaniard will wish he can get rid of the bad eggs in his team quickly because he has already put in a lot of hard work to get them to where they are now.
Arsenal will have to get through this together and one simple way that they can restore their team spirit would be for them to get results on the field when the season resumes.
