Arsenal’s chances of keeping Bukayo Saka beyond his current deal will have been boosted if he reads the words of Sky Sports reporter Vinny O’Connor.
The teenager has emerged as a breakthrough star at Arsenal this season, with Mikel Arteta very impressed by his development.
He is naturally a left-winger, but he has been asked to fill in at left-back for much of this campaign and he hasn’t put a foot wrong so far.
His current deal at the Emirates will expire at the end of next season, but the Gunners hope to tie him down to a new long term contract.
Talks have been ongoing between the club and his representatives but there is no breakthrough yet and they have halted it because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Liverpool emerged as a major suitor earlier this year as the Reds look for a backup to Andrew Robertson.
However, Liverpool has sat on sidelines as his contract talks with Arsenal develops, and Sky Sports reporter, Vinny O’Connor reckons that he expects the teenager to sign a new Arsenal deal.
“Saka does fit Liverpool’s recruitment model,” O’Connor said.
“Eighteen, already impressed in the Premier League, the likelihood is his value will rise, so it makes sense for Liverpool to be looking at that kind of player particularly given he’s only contracted to Arsenal until 2021.
“However, would he get the regular game time at Liverpool that he’s getting now? Probably not
“So whether there’s interest or not I certainly do not see this happening this summer, while Arsenal will continue doing what they can to ensure he stays beyond 2021.”
Liverpool would be an attraction for sure and if they did see him as a back up to Robertson then it makes sense why they would be monitoring the teenager, however, it would be a huge decision for Saka to change positions and clubs at the same time.
That to me makes it very unlikely he will ever end up at Anfield.
