Mirror Sports is claiming that Arsenal will ditch their plans to sign a new goalkeeper this summer after being impressed by Emiliano Martinez and that they will offer the Argentinian a new deal instead.
This would be good news to some fans because we cannot deny that he has been in outstanding form since filling in for Bernd Leno.
He has made some fine saves and if I’m being positive, I think that he can actually get better with time.
However, before we started relying on him, we all had doubts about if he can make it at this level, having never really been given an extended run in the team.
Now that he has started playing, and he has been impressive, isn’t it too soon to judge his impact?
I suspect that a new deal for him will be a long-term one and if he starts underperforming, we could be stuck with a goalie that can’t help us anymore.
The good thing is that he won’t be our number one for long, as Leno will be back soon.
He has kept three clean sheets from five league games this season and he has played an important part in making our season a better one since the restart, but I believe that it is just too soon to judge him and we have to keep the pressure on him to perform by considering a move for another goalie.
